Japan, is one of the world’s largest economies and is highly developed. To keep your trip going smoothly, we’ve created a solid list of adventuring items. So, whether you’re admiring cherry blossoms in Kyoto, tasting Sushi in Tokyo, or soaking in hot springs in Oita, these must-have items will ensure you navigate Japan like a seasoned traveler. Let’s dive into the essentials!

Must-have items when traveling in Japan.

IC Card

Suica, Pasmo, Icoca (or IC Cards), is your ticket to Japan’s efficient and vast public transportation network. Experience the convenience as you effortlessly glide through trains, buses, and even taxis sometimes (check for accepted payment methods on their windows!). No more fumbling for loose change or deciphering complex fare systems. Just tap and go! These handy cards are also valid at vending machines, convenience stores, and certain attractions. Top it up easily at stations or in convenience stores. Remember, it’s “IC” for “Incredibly Convenient”!

Suica is a prepaid rechargeable contactless smart card, electronic money used as a fare card on train lines in Japan.

Wifi Device or SIM Card

In Japan, where connectivity is widespread, don’t take chances with data issues during your adventures. Rent a pocket WiFi device or purchase a SIM card for your unlocked phone. Stay connected 24/7 and navigate like a local using Google Maps. Now, you won’t miss any quirky festivals, hidden gems, or real-time bullet train schedules. Having reliable internet access ensures you’re always just a click away from unforgettable experiences!

Portable Wifi is great if traveling in a group so everyone can share it (most support up to 5 devices).

Yen

In the land of vending machines and quaint street stalls, cash is king. Although credit cards are gaining popularity, many local eateries, rural areas, and smaller shops lean towards cash payments. Therefore, it’s advisable to keep some Yen handy for seamless transactions.  Rest assured, Japan’s ATMs are traveler-friendly, and major convenience stores offer cash withdrawal services.

Many local eateries, rural areas, and smaller shops in Japan lean towards cash payments.

The denominations of Japanese yen notes are 1000, 2000, 5000, and 10,000. The 10,000 notes are rare in circulation and are usually only issued from currency exchanges. You may find it difficult to break a 10,000 note, so use it on a high-ticket item!

If you have a Japanese bank account (or access to one), use an app called Wise, they have the best rates! But if you can manage to use your credit card, that’s the best way to get the most out of your home currency.

Correct travel adapters

Japan’s electrical outlets may differ from what you’re used to, so don’t forget a universal electrical converter. Like the USA, Japan uses the same two-prong powder outlets. Many outlets do not have the grounding cable hole, on the holes for the two prongs (and in some rare cases, both the prong holes are the same size when usually one side is slightly bigger)

Make sure you choose the correct travel adapters.

If you’re an Aussie, make sure your adaptor allows for conversion from your 3 pronged devices. This simple yet essential tool ensures you stay connected, and your devices stay functional throughout your trip. Bid farewell to power-related predicaments and embrace a smooth, electrifying journey!

Portable Charger

Don’t let your adventures deplete your phone battery! Equip yourself with a compact and reliable portable charger – your travel lifesaver. In Japan, where you’ll be engaged in extensive adventures with limited opportunities (or the desire) to charge your devices, a portable power bank is essential. It ensures the smooth continuity of your adventure, whether you’re strolling through neon-lit streets or capturing Shinkansen moments. Keep your devices charged and your spirits high!

Always bring reliable portable charger.

Comfortable Walking Shoes

Prepare to uncover Japan’s awe-inspiring wonders on foot! Whether you’re exploring ancient temples, strolling through bustling markets, or hiking nature trails, comfortable walking shoes are a necessity. Even if you’re not doing anything too demanding, you’re going to be walking a lot in Japan! Opt for sturdy yet stylish footwear that blends fashion and functionality. Trust me, your feet will thank you as you venture from Tokyo’s neon jungles to Kyoto’s historic alleys.

Let’s conquer our 16 DAY JAPAN DISCOVERY one step at a time!

In summer, for ladies, we recommend comfy leather sandals, and for men smart-sneaker casuals

In winter, we recommend waterproof boots or shoes to avoid having cold feer from rain, frost (and snow in some places)

Reusable Bags

Embrace Japan’s eco-conscious movement by carrying reusable bags. Not only will you contribute to reducing plastic waste, but these bags will also prove handy for storing souvenirs and snacks acquired during your journey. With many shops charging for plastic bags, opting for reusable ones becomes a wise and environmentally friendly choice. Become a responsible traveler and leave a positive footprint on this marvelous land!

Hand Towel

In Japan, Oshibori, or moist hand towels, are presented as a refreshing gesture at restaurants, on trains, and in various public spaces. By carrying a compact hand towel(s), you’ll blend seamlessly into this thoughtful custom. Wipe away the summer heat, freshen up before a meal, or use it as a makeshift napkin during your culinary explorations. Unfortunately, some bathrooms don’t have soap in them, so it’s a good idea to bring wet wipes (ideally with alcohol) to keep your hands clean!

Deodorant

A friendly warning, dear travelers – deodorant is a rarity in Japan. If you’re keen on staying fresh all day or haven’t factored in the prospect of extended walks, be sure to pack your preferred deodorant. While Japanese hygiene products are top-notch, deodorants, especially those without a strong scent, are not readily available. Tossing this small essential into your travel bag ensures you remain comfortable amid humid summer days and extensive explorations.

Stay fresh and fabulous as you immerse yourself in the enchantment of Japan.
