Where is Serengeti?

Just where is Serengeti? Tanzania, East Africa, to be precise: the national park lies just north of the equator between the towns of Mwanza, in the west, and Dodoma in the east. It spans around 14,750 sq km (5,700 sq miles) and down towards the border with Kenya — linked by the Maasai Mara National Reserve — into the Maasai region. The Serengeti is the headquarters of a larger, more generalized Serengeti ecosystem of various other protected areas and reserves. Serengeti National Park is home to an astounding number of animals, making it one of the most biodiverse regions in Africa. Over 70 large mammal species and 500 bird species thrive in this vast ecosystem

It’s the ‘Lion King’ Movie in Real Life!

Imagine witnessing over a million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles moving across the plains in a never-ending search for fresh grazing. This is called the Great Migration, and it’s truly one of nature’s most spectacular events. The best time to see this awe-inspiring phenomenon is between June and October when the herds cross the Mara River. Watching them navigate the river, often with hungry crocodiles lurking beneath the surface, is a sight you’ll never forget.

The Big Five: Meeting Africa’s Most Famous Animals

While the Great Migration is a highlight, the Serengeti is also famous for the Big Five: lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards, and rhinoceroses. Spotting these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat is a thrill like no other.

Lions: The Serengeti is often called the “Land of Lions” because of its large lion population. You’ll find these majestic cats lounging in the shade or stalking their prey across the plains. If you’re lucky, you might even hear their powerful roars echoing through the night.

Elephants: These gentle giants can be seen wandering the Serengeti, often in family groups. Watching elephants interact with each other is a touching experience, and their sheer size will leave you in awe.

Buffaloes: African buffaloes are formidable creatures, and encountering a herd of these massive animals is truly impressive. They have a reputation for being unpredictable, so observing them from a safe distance is key.

Leopards: Elusive and solitary, leopards are masters of camouflage. Spotting one is a rare treat, and their beauty and grace are simply mesmerizing.

Rhinoceroses: Although their numbers are small due to poaching, black rhinoceroses can still be found in the Serengeti. Seeing one of these endangered animals in the wild is a poignant reminder of the importance of conservation efforts.

The park’s name, Serengeti, is derived from the Maasai word ‘Siringet’, which means ‘endless plains’. And endless they are. The landscapes of the Serengeti are a mixture of open, treeless plains and woodland with pockets of riverine forest, scarred by erosion pans, kopjes, acacia, and other trees, and rocks. And there is much change in the scenery throughout the year.

Sunrises and sunsets are most beautiful in the Serengeti. In the sky, you can see a gold play of colors, as the long golden rays of the sun get mostly absorbed by the thick air in the lower area of the sky visible behind the horizon. That moment is usually very quiet. It is a good time for contemplation, which you can share only with nature.
